2011 Pediatric Medication Safety Summit

Confronting the Challenges of Neonatal and Pediatric Medication Safety

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Bellevue, WA

Program Overview:

Pediatric patients have a higher risk for error and need specific consideration in our medication use systems. When compared with adults, medication errors are up to three times more likely to occur with pediatric patients, and are more apt to cause injury when they happen. This program will present an overview of the factors that place neonatal and pediatric patients at higher risk of medication error and harm. Focused error reduction strategies will be provided to enhance the safe use of medications in these high-risk populations.

Join us on September 28 at the first Pediatric Medication Safety Summit in Bellevue, WA to learn more about pediatric safety. The Summit is a one-day Educational Review Systems event hosted by bar-code point-of-care (BPOC) expert, Mark Neuenschwander, who is dedicated to patient safety and the 2010 recipient of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Lifetime Achievement Award.

Learning Objectives:

·         Identify reasons why neonatal and pediatric patients are at high risk for medication errors

·         Discuss common medication errors that occur in pediatric and neonatal populations

·         Describe strategies to decrease the risk related to neonatal/pediatric medication use
